Earn credit and resume-building experience preserving Scotland’s culture

Make the most of your summer by gaining invaluable experience working in an organization that is committed to preserving Scotland's historical monuments and artifacts, or to telling the story of Scotland's history, people, and culture.

You’ll spend your first bit of time studying courses that will put your Museum Studies Internship into an academic context including a course from the Scottish History program. One of the courses, Heritage Management, is taught by the former Keeper of Archaeology at the National Museums of Scotland. Next, you’ll spend time in your internship placement with an organization in a heritage-related sector that fits your own academic and professional objectives. Internship placement options include heritage sites such as museums and historical architectural sites in major cities and throughout Scotland up into the Highlands.

Past research projects have covered topics such as the political role of the Hope family between the Union of the Crowns and the Union of the Parliament; various topics regarding the Hopetoun House, a historic stately home, including their painting collection, material collections and the role of women at the estate; research, preservation, data analysis and object descriptions for AOC Archaeology, a private archaeology organization; the architecture and furniture of Robert Lorimer and his relationship to Whytock and Reid.

  • Your courses will involve many embedded site visits and three, day-long excursions. This will put your heritage internship into an academic context and includes a course from the Scottish History program.

  • You’ll also complete an academic project based on independent research and your workplace experience. In the final week of the program, you will present and defend your project in an oral examination.
